The animals at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center are wildlife ambassadors who help people connect with New Hampshire’s natural world in a personal, memorable way.
Since the beginning, these animals have offered visitors up-close encounters that turn curiosity into understanding and appreciation.
Most of the animals in our care are orphaned, injured, or otherwise unable to survive in the wild. By observing them in naturalistic habitats and exploring our hands-on exhibits, visitors gain a deeper understanding of native wildlife, their habitats, and the conservation challenges they face.

In addition to the animals along the Live Animal Exhibit Trail, the Science Center is home to a special group of wildlife ambassador animals who appear in our education programs on site and in schools and public settings throughout the region. These animals are carefully trained to be comfortable around people, and our dedicated animal care and veterinary team supports their wellbeing with individualized diets, enrichment, and wellness care.
