Small‑group Nature & Wildlife Tours with Iain MacLeod

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers exceptional nature & wildlife tours each year, led by Executive Director Iain MacLeod, a native of Scotland and an experienced group tour leader. These small‑group nature tours take you to spectacular landscapes in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, as well as to renowned birding hotspots in New Mexico, blending wildlife watching with rich natural and cultural history.

With a maximum of 12 travelers and an unhurried pace, these trips are designed for people who want to experience wild places deeply, while viewing birds and other wildlife, enjoying local food and hospitality, and having time to relax, learn, and build new friendships.

Iain has organized and led tours of Scotland more than twenty times, personally crafting each itinerary to showcase:

  • Scotland’s coastal and island wildlife, including seabirds, raptors, and marine life
  • Dramatic Highland and island scenery—beaches, moors, cliffs, and lochs
  • Local culture, history, and everyday life in the communities you visit

In New Mexico, Iain’s birding trips focus on:

  • Spectacular concentrations of cranes, geese, and other waterfowl
  • Desert, canyon, and high‑country habitats rich in birdlife
  • Iconic landscapes and the unique mix of cultures that define the region

Hotels are chosen by Iain for their comfort, ambiance, hospitality, and excellent food. Each day’s activities are arranged to balance wildlife viewing, scenic walks, and cultural experiences, so you really get a feel for the places you visit rather than rushing from one stop to the next.
