The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and Squam Archives Center collaboratively present Nature’s Scion; Harold J. Coolidge Jr.- A Life that Shaped the Global Environmental Movement.
This feature-length documentary film by Hal’s great-nephew Miles Coolidge is built around an oral history conducted on Squam Lake’s Long Island in the summer of 1983 that covers all of Hal Coolidge’s incredibly impactful life as a primatologist, zoologist, and architect of the institutions that continue as the backbones of the global environmental movement. Drawing from a large multimedia archive, Nature’s Scion is shown as a fleshed-out working draft with an opportunity for questions and comments in conversation with Miles Coolidge, who will present the project in person. The film we be compemented by a book of the same title soon to be published by Doppelhouse Press in September.
The opportunity to have the first public screening of this project at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is especially meaningful because Squam Lake is the place that nurtured Hal’s love of nature during his childhood summers here, which also led to his strong support for the Natural Science Center in its early years.
The film runtime is approximately 60 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A session. Participants are invited to bring comfortable camp chairs and snacks or dinner. Light non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be provided.
