BioBlitz Walks: Butterflies with Heidi Holman & George DeWolf

Butterflies with Heidi Holman, Wildlife Biologist, & George DeWolf, Baker Ponds Butterfly Count Coordinator

Heidi Holman is a wildlife diversity biologist with the NH Fish and Game Department. Her primary responsibilities include implementation of recovery efforts for at-risk butterflies and the New England cottontail rabbit with habitat restoration and release of individuals from captive breeding programs. Recently, Heidi launched the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network, a collaborative effort across the state to create awareness of the species in our state and collect current data on their distribution and abundance.

George is an amateur naturalist who struggles to focus on any one corner of the natural world—he’s interested in just about everything. He serves as coordinator of the Baker Ponds Butterfly Count, New Hampshire’s longest-running butterfly survey; is a Plant Conservation Volunteer with the Native Plant Trust; volunteers at Quincy Bog Natural Area, where he guides an annual wildflower walk and leads local school groups on walks around the bog; and is a trail adopter for the Forest Service.

In recent years, his focus has been on raising awareness of butterflies—offering online training in their identification and inspiring others to observe them and support their conservation.
