Our longest running bird monitoring project is the fall hawk migration count, conducted with 4th graders at InterLakes Elementary School in Meredith. The 2025 season marked the 45th consecutive year of counting involving our staff, a remarkable legacy of student-powered wildlife conservation. Each fall, students and naturalists scan the skies, tally migrating raptors, and contribute real data to a continent-wide effort.
All of the data collected is added to HawkCount, an online database run by the Hawk Migration Association. Combined with data from hundreds of other hawk watch sites across the Americas, these records help scientists understand long-term population trends for migratory raptors and inform conservation decisions.
