Researchers from the University of New Hampshire, in partnership with New Hampshire Fish and Game, are utilizing the Science Center campus to trap and collar Fishers as part of a statewide Fisher study aimed at uncovering Fisher movements and survival rates to inform future conservation planning. Science Center staff are assisting the researchers by monitoring cameras and traps placed on our campus.
This collaboration is helping us learn more about Fishers, elusive members of the weasel family that roam local forests. By safely trapping and collaring individuals, scientists can map their movements and track their survival rates to better understand how to conserve this rarely seen predator. Our Naturalists are able to incorporate the information learned through this study into our education programs, helping the public to gain a better understanding and deepen their appreciation of Fishers.
