Explore the world of flying predators through stories, nature viewing, and visits with live owls, hawks, and falcons. Learn about raptor adaptations and the natural communities where raptors live.

Crawl, wiggle, hop, and fly as we investigate one of the largest groups of animals on Earth: Insects! Explore the nooks and crannies of the outdoors, collect and examine examples of our six-legged friends, and meet some live animals that depend on insects for survival.

GeoCamp

The Lakes Region has not always had lakes! Learn how the lakes and mountains of this area were created by volcanoes, glaciers, and time. We’ll travel to a mine, tour the geology of Squam Lake, and even scale an extinct volcano! Lots of fun, hands-on activities – we’ll make fossils, play-dough volcanoes, topographic maps, and even ice cream magma!

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Through adventures in the gardens at the Science Center and Longhaul Farm, we’ll learn all the good things to know to make your garden grow! Each child will complete the week with a miniature garden to take home.

Eco-Heroes    

Ages 8-10

Acquire the skills to become ecologically responsible and feel great about doing it!  Become immersed in activities and storytelling that will promote critical thinking and green practices while challenging everyone's inner hero to shine!

Be A Survivor

Ages 10-13 - FULL TAKING WAIT LIST

Would you be able to survive if you were lost in the woods? Gaining a deeper understanding of the wilderness is the key to survival! We’ll teach you how to be prepared, build survival shelters, and navigate the forest. Learn the ancient arts of fire building, silent movement, and animal tracking. These skills will help you feel at home in the forest!

Critter Theater

Join us for a week of fun with a theatrical twist! Participants will meet live animals up-close, and then take to the Little Church Theater stage to create a “natural world” play from what they learn! The course will be held jointly at the Science Center and The Little Church Theater. Bring the family to see the environmental theater production on the last day.

BioBattle     

Ages 7-9

         July 28-August 1     1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.         
Learn about the relationships among organisms – it is not always simple and harmonious, and at times is a knock down, drag-out battle for supremacy. Whether it involves succession and competition among plants or predator and prey, the natural world is a wild place. Join us to take a peek at the BioBattle!
Cost: $100/member; $120/non-member

Art Through Observation        

Ages 10-13

       July 28-August 1    9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.   
With guidance from a Currier Art Center instructor, students will develop their observational skills through drawing, painting, and printmaking from examples of the native plants, animals, and landscapes of the Science Center. Several media will be explored including pencils, pastels, tempera paints, watercolor paints, and relief printing-making. Inspiration will be drawn from the work of famous “nature” artists such as Marsden Hartley, Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, and others.
Cost: $245/member; $270/non-member

Beak Basics     

Ages 5 and 6 only  

  August 4-8      9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.            
Discover what makes our feathered friends unique as we explore the world of song, flight, and food through stories, song, art, and nature walks. Build a bird nest and meet several live birds.

Wildlife Painting and Sculpture 

Ages 7-10 - FULL TAKING WAIT LIST

  August 4-8 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Students will explore the exciting territory where art and science overlap with assistance from both Science Center and Currier Art Center staff. After studying a variety of animals, students will visually express their newfound knowledge by working in two-dimensional media such as watercolor and tempera paint, as well as three-dimensional media including wire, clay, paper mache, and plaster.
Cost: $245/member; $270/non-member

Cancellations…Ours and Yours!

If you cancel at least two weeks prior to the start of the program, your payment will be refunded minus a $10 handling fee. If you cancel within one week of the start of the program, your payment will not be refunded.

If there is low enrollment, SLNSC will cancel week-long programs the Wednesday prior to the scheduled start. SLNSC will make every effort to alert participants to this possibility one month in advance.
